About

A magazine for the years
that keep changing us.

The Artful Age is for people navigating later life, family across generations, and the creative habits that make aging feel more human. Steered by Editors-in-Chief Graeme and Jeanette Brown.

We've become The Artful Age

This publication began with kids' art, process crafts, and creative family life at the table. That archive still lives here, and we still care about making as connection.

What readers actually come for now is broader and older: retirement and purpose, memory and hearing and health, adult children and aging parents, loneliness and friendship, nostalgia from the 1960s and 70s, and the psychology of becoming yourself again after the kids leave home.

The name caught up with the magazine. The Artful Age is the same publication, grown up with its audience, still published by Brown Brothers Media, still edited by Graeme and Jeanette.

What we cover

Later life

Aging with a clear eye

Retirement, purpose, health, memory, friendship, solitude, and the daily choices that shape how the years feel from the inside.

Family across generations

Parents, children, grandparents

Adult children, aging parents, grandparenting, inheritance of habits and stories, and the repair work families keep doing.

Art & play

Making as connection

The craft archive that started this magazine: screen-free projects, seasonal making, and creativity as a family practice, not a performance.

We treat creativity as something bigger than crafts. It is how people notice each other, repair, remember, and keep becoming, at every age.

Editorial standards

  • Every published piece is reviewed and approved by a member of our team before it goes live. AI tools are a substantial part of how we produce The Artful Age: they help find and organise sources, draft, edit, check facts and links, and audit published work, and they may produce much of an initial draft. Where an editor is named on an article, that is the person who reviewed it. Important factual claims are supportable and important sources are linked. We say that we interviewed, contacted or investigated something only when we did.
  • Quotations are attributed. Images carry credits where available.
  • We correct confirmed errors promptly. Material corrections carry a dated note explaining what changed. Articles whose central premise cannot stand are withdrawn, with a notice left at the original address where appropriate.
  • We follow established journalistic practice for sensitive topics: medical, financial, and mental-health content is published with appropriate disclaimers and links to qualified professional advice.
  • Where an article contains an affiliate link or recommends a product or service connected to Brown Brothers Media, its founders, its staff or their families, that relationship is disclosed in the article near the recommendation.
