Put four toys in a playroom instead of sixteen, and toddlers may stay with each episode of toy play roughly twice as long. That was the central result of a 2018 University of Toledo study published in Infant Behavior and Development.
Across the study, play episodes averaged 117 seconds when four toys were present and 56 seconds when sixteen were available. The toddlers also used the toys in a greater variety of ways when the selection was smaller.
The distinction matters, however: the experiment did not compare a basket with an open shelf. It compared the number of toys available in the room. The finding supports limiting the visible selection, but it does not show that one type of storage furniture works better than another.

What the researchers actually did
The study was conducted by Carly Dauch, Michelle Imwalle, Brooke Ocasio and Alexia E. Metz. It included 36 typically developing toddlers between 18 and 30 months old.
Each child completed two supervised free-play sessions. One room contained four toys, while the other contained sixteen. The order of the conditions was randomized, and researchers analysed a fifteen-minute portion of each session.
The toys represented four broad categories: educational, pretend, action and vehicle toys. The four-toy condition included one toy from each category, while the sixteen-toy condition included four from each. Different toys were used across the two conditions, and the precise toy sets also varied among participants.
Researchers recorded how many separate episodes of toy play occurred, how long each episode lasted and how many different actions the child performed with the toys. A play episode began when a child deliberately touched a toy and ended when the child’s attention shifted elsewhere.
What changed when fewer toys were present
In the four-toy condition, the toddlers averaged 9.8 episodes of play, compared with 19.6 in the sixteen-toy condition. Their individual episodes lasted an average of 117 seconds rather than 56 seconds, an increase of 108 percent.
The children also averaged eleven different manners of play in the four-toy sessions, compared with seven in the sixteen-toy sessions. The researchers described manners of play as actions such as drumming, dumping, exploring, pretending, matching, gathering or inserting.
These figures do not mean every child followed the same pattern or performed a particular sequence of imaginative actions. They show that, across the group, fewer available toys were associated with fewer switches, longer episodes and a broader range of play behaviours.
Why competing toys may interrupt play
The researchers interpreted the additional toys as possible sources of external distraction. In the sixteen-toy condition, children moved between objects more frequently. With only four toys present, they still explored most of the available selection, but they switched less often.
Toddlers are still developing the ability to choose a target and resist competing distractions. In that context, another appealing toy can offer a reason to abandon the object already in hand before its possibilities have been fully explored.
Calling this effect “visual clutter” is a reasonable plain-language description, but the study did not use eye tracking or brain imaging. It did not directly measure eye movements, neural networks or the precise internal reason each child changed toys.
What longer play means here
The researchers were not measuring stillness or expecting toddlers to use one object for an entire session. Their measure captured how long children remained engaged before shifting their attention, along with how many different things they did during play.
Longer contact can give a child more opportunities to test an object’s features and discover new uses for it. The study found more varied play when fewer toys were present, but it did not measure intelligence, school readiness or long-term development.
That makes the finding useful but narrow. Fewer visible toys changed play during short, supervised sessions. The experiment did not establish that children with smaller toy collections become more creative or develop faster over time.
The practical takeaway for a playroom
The researchers did suggest making fewer toys available during any one play session. In the university’s account of the findings, lead investigator Alexia E. Metz advised parents with many toys to save some for later and swap them into play over time.
The published paper makes a similar recommendation: small collections can be rotated while most toys remain stored. This creates opportunities for novelty without presenting the entire collection at once.
The study does not prescribe a particular basket, a universal limit of four to six toys or a two-week rotation schedule. Those details can be adjusted to the child, the toys and the household. The evidence-backed starting point is simply to reduce how many competing toys are available at the same moment.
What the study cannot tell us
This was a small convenience sample with limited geographic, socioeconomic and ethnic representation. Twenty-seven of the 36 participants were girls, and nearly all were White. The findings therefore should not be treated as a universal rule for every child.
The sessions took place in controlled rooms rather than the children’s homes. Each child experienced each condition once, and the toys were not identical across conditions or participants. The researchers themselves said that repeated exposure and natural home environments require further study.
The experiment also did not compare open shelving with baskets, cabinets or other storage arrangements. A closed cabinet may be a sensible way to keep unused toys out of view, but that specific furniture choice was not tested.

A modest change worth testing
Parents do not need to discard a large toy collection to apply the study’s central idea. They can place a smaller selection in the play area, store the remainder out of sight and observe whether their child switches less and explores more.
The defensible conclusion is not that baskets are magical or that sixteen toys are inherently harmful. It is that, in this small experiment, reducing the number of available toys gave toddlers a longer chance to remain with what they had already begun.
The child did not change. The opportunity to keep playing did.
