Most people’s default strategy for not forgetting something, reread it a few more times, cram it in the night before, feels intuitively right in the moment. Two of the most well-established studies in memory research suggest both instincts are working against long-term retention, not for it.
The first comes from a 2006 study by Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke, published in Psychological Science. Across two experiments, college students studied prose passages and were then assigned to either restudy the material again or take a recall test on it without feedback, before being tested a final time after 5 minutes, 2 days, or a week. On the immediate test, the restudying group actually performed better, and participants who restudied also reported feeling more confident about how well they’d remember the material later. But on the delayed tests, 2 days and a week out, the pattern reversed: the group that had tested themselves, actively trying to recall the material rather than simply rereading it, retained substantially more than the group that restudied. The strategy that felt more effective in the moment was the one that performed worse where it actually mattered, for retention over time.
A second, much larger body of evidence points to a related but distinct instinct that also turns out to be backwards. In a 2006 meta-analysis by Nicholas Cepeda, Harold Pashler, Edward Vul, John Wixted, and Doug Rohrer, published in Psychological Bulletin, the researchers pooled more than 800 separate effect-size comparisons drawn from 317 experiments across 184 published studies, comparing massed practice, cramming everything into one sitting, against distributed practice, spreading the same amount of study time out over multiple sessions. Distributed practice reliably produced better long-term retention than massed practice across this large body of research. The researchers also found that the ideal length of the gap between study sessions wasn’t fixed, it grew longer the further out someone needed to remember the material, meaning the right spacing strategy depends on how long the memory actually needs to last.

Together, these two bodies of research describe the same underlying problem from two different angles: the study habits that feel most efficient in the moment are often the ones working least well for long-term memory. Roediger and Karpicke’s research shows that actively testing yourself, even without any feedback, produces meaningfully better retention than passively rereading the same material, despite rereading feeling more comfortable and more confidence-inspiring at the time. Cepeda and colleagues’ much larger pooled analysis shows that spreading practice out over time reliably beats cramming for long-term retention, and that the right spacing isn’t one-size-fits-all, it should scale with how long the information needs to stick. Both point toward the same conclusion: the discomfort of testing yourself and the patience of spacing sessions out are doing real work that easier, more comfortable habits aren’t.
It’s worth being honest about what these two sources don’t establish. Roediger and Karpicke’s study was conducted specifically with college students studying prose passages under controlled lab conditions, so while the underlying mechanism, retrieval practice beating passive review, is well replicated elsewhere, this particular study doesn’t directly test every kind of everyday forgetfulness, like remembering where keys were left or a friend’s birthday. Cepeda and colleagues’ meta-analysis, while unusually large and thorough, pools together many different kinds of verbal recall tasks and study designs, which means the specific ideal spacing interval for any one person’s specific situation, studying for an exam versus learning a new language, will vary rather than following one universal formula.
Within those honest limits, the research supports a genuinely useful, if slightly uncomfortable, correction to how most people try to remember things. Instead of rereading notes or cramming the night before, actively quizzing yourself and deliberately spacing out practice over multiple sessions, even though both feel harder and less immediately rewarding, are the strategies with real, well-documented evidence behind them for actually beating forgetfulness over time.
